FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Burt Mitchell, Champion Piper, to Perform at Irish Cultural and Learning Center

Phoenix, AZ—June 4, 2002—The Great Hall at the Irish Cultural and Learning Center will ring with the sound of bagpipes on Friday, June 21, 2002. Champion Piper Burt Mitchell, of Roanoke, VA, will present a concert of Irish and Scottish music, including well-known favorites, competition-level tunes, and Piobaireachd, the “classical” music of the Highland Bagpipe. The concert will start at 7:00 PM.

Mr. Mitchell has been a consistent prize winner in piping competitions since he first started playing at age 9 in Wilmington, Delaware. He was named Champion of Champions-Open Piper for the Eastern United States and recently won Second Place in the All Ireland competition at Listowel, County Kerry, Ireland.

Mr. Mitchell has directed several bagpipe bands on the East Coast and performed with the City of Washington Pipe Band (formerly known as Denny and Dunipace Pipe Band), one of the premier Grade I pipe bands in the world today. He is well known for his innovative methods of medley development and composition.

In the mid 90’s Mr. Mitchell introduced “The Pipe Teacher’s Assistant,” a groundbreaking series of books and CDs that help new and advanced bagpipers learn traditional pipe tunes. There are now three book/CD sets on the market, and a fourth set, concentrating on Irish tunes, will be issued in July.

The Irish Cultural and Learning Center is located at 1134 N. Central Avenue, in Margaret Hance Park. Admission to the Burt Mitchell Concert is $5.00; tickets are available from members of the Phoenix Scottish Pipe Band or by calling 623-939-4321.
